Intermediate Designer - Interiors
Description
Brook McIlroy is seeking a talented Intermediate Designer to join our Interiors team. This role is ideal for a creative individual with 4 – 5 years of experience in the architecture & design industry, specifically in corporate/commercial, recreational, government and institutional sectors. The candidate should be passionate about design, possess strong technical skills, and have a desire to grow within a collaborative environment. An established practice of almost 25 years, our work is driven by a uniquely Canadian design ethos derived from research into place, diverse cultures, Indigenous world views, sustainability, natural materials, and the application of new technologies. Work on exciting projects across the country covering a variety of design disciplines and help raise the public and professional profile of Brook McIlroy and our Indigenous Design Studio.
Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to meet strict client-driven deadlines, and collaborative.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Senior Designers in schematic design, design development and construction
- Meticulously support throughout the design process which may include programming, blocking and stacking, design plans, elevations and details, reflected ceiling plans, millwork design, furniture layouts, finish plans, colour plans, schedules, cost analysis, engineering systems coordination, document checking.
- Participate in site analysis, including surveying existing conditions and taking field measurements.
- Application of basic elements and principles of design including form, scale, colour, texture, pattern, light, balance, and proportion.
- Prepare detailed drawings, specifications, and documentation for construction.
- Coordinate with consultants, contractors and fabricators, and regulatory agencies to meet overall project objectives.
- Conduct research on materials and products to support design decisions.
- Participate in client meetings and presentations.
- Assist in the selection of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and finishes.
- Involvement during Construction Administration.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in interior design or related field
- 4 – 5 years of relevant experience in interior design & architecture (preferably in commercial, recreational, government and / or institutional projects).
- Proficiency in Revit, Enscape, Rhino, Sketchup, AutoCAD and the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Knowledge of building codes, standards and regulations.
- Familiarity with the AODA and other relevant universal design and accessibility standards.
- Strong design and presentation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
- Ability to problem solve and pay strong attention to detail.
- Have a passion for developing presentations.
- Positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning and strong work ethic.
Salary:
Salary will be commensurate with experience, designations, and qualifications (range $60k-$82k).

- Experience working on furniture and signage tender packages.
- Sustainable design certification / knowledge of sustainable design standards.
- ARIDO / IDC membership.
- NCIDQ Certification or interest in completing NCIDQ exams.

Our regular office hours are 9:00am to 5:30pm, with 1/2 hour unpaid lunch, at our Spadina Studio location. Note: we are moving to a new Junction Triangle location in Fall 2024 which will be easily accessible via UP Express, TTC, Go Transit and West Toronto Rail path and have amenities such as:
